This week, Author’s Digest welcomes Ren Brim, self-published author of A Simple Act of Betrayal. The book (published last year) is her first with AuthorHouse, and we welcome her to our writer community!
Thanks for talking with us, Ren. Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a conservative city girl with a very inventive imagination. I would like to flatter myself by referring to the many college courses that I have taken, or allude to the large number of creative papers I’ve submitted to professors. But… I can’t. Once again, I simply know that writing is my gift from above. And I strongly believe this because the story just comes naturally.
Do you have any literary influences that helped you develop your style?
In my late teens, I found an author whose writings gripped at my soul. Therefore, nightly, I tore through one book after another. That author shall remain nameless for now, but his thrilling reads sparked my engine to tell another story–from my perspective. As a woman, my ideas for each character or place I write about are pulled solely from my past, current happenings and what could be. But then I alter those thoughts, which seem to
build a life all on their own.
Please tell us about your book.
A Simple Act of Betrayal is the type of novel that I don’t believe should be on the big screen. And yes, I realize that most suspense writers would never express that opinion. However, I wrote this book to allow my readers to imagine the location as their own hometown–they have the ability to create each character within their minds.
And although A Simple Act of Betrayal was originally written as a movie, I realized that I could tell more of the story within the pages of a book. It’s is a timeless read that’s written for all cultures. It’s also a crime thriller with comedic undertones, and (because I’m a woman) the book is streaming with gentle romance.
The suspense, coupled with action, will have my readers gripped. And, hopefully, I can spark that writing engine for someone else.
(To be concluded…)
