It’s always exciting to welcome award-winners to Author’s Digest, and this week we have that privilege. Jeanette Bishop and Helen Varga’s book, WTF I’m Trying to Be Spiritual: A Guidebook for Loving Yourself without Fear, is a finalist in the Body/Mind/Spirit category at the 11th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards! The book also won in the New Age: Non-Fiction category at the 2015 International Book Awards (and was a finalist in the Spiritual: General category).
Jeanette and Helen, please tell us a little about yourselves.
We have no literary background–it shows! However, personal experiences make up for that by how we feel. They always say write what you know, and we did.
What about books that influenced your style or choice of genre?
Jeanette: Not really; I guess the Bible was an influence to speak of, like reading it and saying we could go deeper into our spirituality… instead of just skimming the surface with do’s, don’ts, and parables (no disrespect meant or intended at all). I just think the universe is bigger than anything we could write about. I feel we are bigger and more creative than that as a human race, and we are filled with a huge capacity to love regardless of religion, race, or culture.
Helen: I read a lot of occult books when I was younger, so obviously I always loved Spirit, the supernatural, and the like. Back then it was about being frightened of Spirit and the forms conjured regarding the supernatural; however, now it is about the Spirit’s/Source’s love.
Please tell us about WTF I’m Trying to Be Spiritual.
It’s a narrative on questions posed and answers given from a deeper spiritual source than being in the physical. It can also be expanded upon much further, if we dug deeper.
What inspired you to write the book?
Jeanette: Inspiration is an interesting word isn’t it? I would say I was the last person on earth that would want to inspire anyone however, the love present within our spiritual journey knows no bounds and it was time to express it fully.
Helen: Having Jeanette as a spiritual mentor and thus years of information from Spirit, it was time to take that material and share it with others.
