Yolanda L. Everett on Self-Publishing

Today, AuthorHouse continues our interview with Yolanda L. Everett, author of Peter and the Boycott. The first part of our interview is available here.

Yolanda, what was the inspiration behind your book?

I was moved by a speech I heard in which the speaker challenged the audience to carry on Dr. King’s legacy. He said, “We all have a story to tell and something to give back.” This is my way of giving back to the next generation. Dr. King’s message of peace, love, and nonviolence is needed in our society like never before. When my father shared this story with me, I felt it was too good not to be shared with others and started the publishing process.

How long did it take you to finish it?

I started writing the book in June of 2012 and finished the entire process in February of 2014. The book was published that following March.

Is there one message you’d like to convey to readers about your book?

I would like my readers to know that change can come about through peaceful means and that conflict resolution is essential. I think it’s important for children to understand that it’s okay to stand up for what is right, just as Rosa Parks did. If someone is being mistreated, especially in this age of bullying, don’t just stand by and let it happen. Be bold and do something to stop injustices you see taking place.

What was your favorite part of self-publishing?

I had control over my book, and could be as creative as I desired. It helped to have guidance along the way, and I was thankful for the guidance I received from AuthorHouse. My book coordinator, Hilary Kanyi, made great suggestions and offered a package that would really get my book noticed by others. It was fun, and I was in complete charge of it.

We’ll present the conclusion of our interview with Yolanda next week. Her book, Peter and the Boycott, is available in the AuthorHouse Bookstore.
